Dear Reader:
Looking back on the last year of activity at Civic Consulting Alliance fills me with a great sense of pride and accomplishment.
Our unique model of public-private partnership depends on our Board, staff, pro bono partners, and clients working in concert, and the past year brought several affirming examples of our commitment to a common cause and collaborative execution.
We are committed to creating a vibrant organization in which people from many backgrounds experience a sense of belonging, have the opportunity to be heard, and contribute and excel in driving equity in our region. Dedicated teams within both our Board and staff examined our recruitment and hiring practices and proposed revisions to bring greater diversity, equity, and inclusion to our organization. At the Board level, we this year recruited the most diverse class of new members in recent memory.
Thirty-six pro bono partners joined with us to invest $10.5 million in the issues that matter most in our region, which you can read more about in this year’s Scorecard. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to them all for their role in making that possible, and I am pleased to report that here, too, our Board led by example. For the first time, we made an explicit ask for financial support from the Board. Both the unanimous participation and the total amount raised speak volumes about the generosity and enthusiasm of our members.
Staff, Board, and pro bono partners together followed through on our leadership’s decision to invest heavily in our Public Safety & Criminal Justice and Economic Vitality platforms. With many more opportunities to take on critical projects, including in Education, our third platform area—our investment decisions must be driven by a strong sense of mission. Our focus remains on identifying places where we believe our people and our partners will have the most leverage to make a positive impact.
The sustained investment of Chicago’s business and civic leaders in improving the lives of everyone in our region is what Civic Consulting Alliance stands for and what makes our work possible. In recognition of that point, I wish to close by acknowledging the work in our fourth and newest platform area, Civic Leadership. We strive to create a more inclusive culture of civic leadership in Chicago, one that builds on the strengths of our history of engaged leadership to create a more equitable culture of leadership, where the benefits of economic growth are shared, and trust in institutions is strengthened.
I am grateful for and inspired by all of our Board members, staff, pro bono partners, funders, and clients who work every day to make our region a great place to live in and work. Thank you for what you do.
Sincerely,
Deborah L. DeHaas, Chair
Civic Consulting Alliance
